The average gestation period in a dog is 58 to 65 days (an average of 63 days). When the bitch is pregnant for nearly 60 days, the signs of childbirth gradually appear:

1. The bitch began to look restless, constantly scratching the floor and cushions with her forefeet, making a nest and building a nest.

2. Most bitches do not eat within 24 hours before giving birth, or choose only a small amount of favorite food; some will vomit slightly before giving birth.

When these signs appear, you must always be ready to deliver the baby. The bitch who is about to give birth will keep turning back and forth, arching her back, and her abdomen will become bigger, starting to show signs of exertion and labor pains. Usually dogs start giving birth in the middle of the night or early in the morning.

Preparation before labor:

Production utensils: clean towels, scissors, thread, cotton, disinfectant (superior iodine), washbasin, old newspaper. It is best to have heat preservation equipment (light bulbs, electric blankets, thick towels, etc.) when producing in winter.

Work closely with veterinarians: for dogs with no delivery experience or with bitches with a high rate of dystocia (such as Chihuahua, Pomeranian, Bulldog … (etc.), it is best to be delivered by a doctor. Antenatal examinations should be done several times before delivery, and the possible date of delivery should be known in advance so that it can be sent to the hospital in time. For owners who want bitches to give birth at home, it is best to have some knowledge of the whole birth process and ask the doctor for advice on how to assist in delivery.

Energy supplement: the bitch may be physically exhausted in the process of giving birth. In order to replenish the energy needed at any time, nutritious and digestible food can be prepared and fed during the production interval.

Disinfection of birth ring, birth nest and dog body

Before arranging the expectant bitch to enter the birth ring, the floor, ceiling, walls, inside and outside the nest and bedding grass should be disinfected repeatedly, especially the bedding grass in the nest should be turned up and down and sterilized thoroughly.

At present, there are many disinfection drugs sold in the market, and the most effective and disinfection effect is sodium hydroxide, commonly known as fiery alkali. The disinfection concentration of sodium hydroxide is 1% mi 2%, and spraying is better.

It can kill all kinds of viruses, pathogens and parasite eggs in venues and appliances, and has the characteristics of wide effect and quick effect. However, due to corrosiveness, you should be careful not to hurt people and dogs, and put the bitch circle at least half an hour after disinfection.

The disinfection of the body surface of soon-to-be-delivered bitches is not only for the health of the bitches, but also conducive to the health and hygiene of postpartum newborn dogs. According to research, the intestinal parasites infected by lactating puppies mainly come from the body surface of bitches.

Ascaris eggs and tapeworm eggs attached to the coat or skin of a female dog can be infected by sucking its nipples. Therefore, it is very necessary to disinfect the female dog before delivery.

The way of bathing the dog can be taken, or the towel can be dipped in the solution according to the order of front-to-back, top-down, first hair, then reverse hair, wipe the dog body many times, and scrub the towel frequently, so that the dog body is fully exposed to the liquid to kill viruses, pathogens and all kinds of eggs.

There are many drugs used in dog disinfection, such as Lysol, bromogeramine, formaldehyde and so on. Special attention should be paid to disinfecting the vagina, buttocks and breasts of a bitch who is about to give birth. It is better to scrub with 0.5% Lysol solution.
