Site: the wild cave environment of pangolin needs to be simulated. Feed: each pangolin needs to eat 80-120g termites a day. Management: actively clean and disinfect food basin and water basin. Disease prevention and treatment: pangolin adaptability is poor, easy to cause enteritis, pneumonia, dermatitis and other diseases, if there is abnormal timely diagnosis and treatment. Note: artificial culture pangolin needs to obtain relevant documents before it can be carried out. At present, the artificial culture of pangolin is still in the experimental stage.

Can pangolins be cultured artificially?

Pangolin is a second-class protected animal in China, it is forbidden to hunt and eat, illegal hunting, smuggling or trafficking of pangolin is a serious illegal act.

If you want to cultivate pangolins, you need to obtain relevant certificates before you can carry out artificial breeding, and you need to submit a "report on applying for a license for domestication and breeding of Wild Animals" to the relevant local departments in writing. Breeding can be carried out after the provincial forestry department approves the issuance of the "license for Wild Animal breeding and domestication".

Culture methods and techniques of pangolin

1. Construction of breeding grounds

Pangolin is a mammal, living in caves all the year round, its wild nature is strong, and its ability to adapt to the environment is poor, so artificial breeding should simulate wild habits and build adaptive feeding rooms for it.

Generally, the feeding room can be divided into an inner room and an activity field, the area of the activity field can be controlled at about 60 inches, and the ground should be laid with cement, with a 2m-high wall around the activity field, and an underground pool and a dung tank should be built in the field; because pangolins have the habit of digging holes and burying dung during defecation, soil should be placed in the dung tank. The feeding chamber can be divided into several chambers, and a hemispherical nest with a diameter of 60cm and deep 40cm is made in the middle of each chamber, with some cut hay covered with a wooden cover, and a pangolin is raised in each chamber.

2. Capture and purchase seed pangolin

At present, the pangolin provenances used for breeding in our country can not be propagated artificially, and they are basically wild pangolins, but pangolins are protected animals in our country, and any illegal form of hunting and trading is prohibited, so it is necessary to solve the provenance. Only after the approval of the relevant departments can you go up the mountain to hunt. The summer and autumn season is the breeding time of pangolins, and it is easier to hunt.

3. Feeding management

Pangolins have special food habits. They specialize in eating ants. Each pangolin needs to eat 80-120g termites a day, so it is difficult to catch termites in artificial culture. Termites can be introduced to multiply by digging holes in the ground and laying branches and leaves of rotten pine trees in the pit. Pangolins that have just been introduced will not eat artificial feed, but should be fed to termites or black ants, and then gradually change the feed ratio after they slowly adapt to it, until they gradually get used to artificial feed; if individual pangolins refuse to eat for a long time, artificial feeding can be carried out. Artificially prepared feed should ensure that the proportion of various ingredients is appropriate and palatable.

4. Daily management

Regularly clean and disinfect the feeding room, often change the soil of the dung tank of the water dispenser, clean and disinfect the food basin and water basin every day, regularly and quantitatively feed the pangolin once a day, and feed 150-200g artificial feed each time. After eating, the pangolins were put into the activity ground for 2-3 hours.

5. Disease prevention

Pangolin from wild to domestic, the early adaptability to the environment is poor, easy to cause enteritis, pneumonia, dermatitis and other diseases. In the initial stage of artificial feeding, their conditions should be observed at any time, and if abnormalities are found, timely diagnosis and corresponding measures should be taken to treat them. The indoor temperature of pangolin is best controlled at 18-25 ℃ and the relative humidity is controlled at 60-70% to ensure that the room is warm in winter and cool in summer so as to promote the growth and development of pangolin.
