Last Updated: 2024/11/05, When we peel off the skin of garlic, we can usually see many small cloves. A garlic usually contains 4 cloves or even a dozen cloves. However, sometimes there is only one clove of garlic after peeling, which is called single-clove garlic. Today, I would like to introduce to you the cultivation of garlic.

When we peel garlic, we usually see many small garlic cloves. A garlic usually contains 4 to 5 or even 10 garlic cloves. However, sometimes there is only one garlic petal after peeling, which is called a single garlic petal. Today, I will introduce you to the cultivation technology of garlic alone.

1. Single garlic planting technology

1. soil preparation

Choose sandy loam or light loam. Avoid continuous cropping. After harvesting, 2500 kg of decomposed manure and 50 kg of calcium superphosphate were applied as base fertilizer per 667 square meters. After shallow ploughing and harrowing, it is made into a flat ridge about 1.4 meters wide, and the ridge surface is required to be flat.

2. variety selection

The cloves used in the production of single-headed garlic must be small garlic cloves, so it is generally selected from garlic varieties with more garlic cloves and smaller garlic cloves. However, when garlic varieties are different, the percentage and weight of garlic are obviously different, thus affecting the yield and quality of garlic. Therefore, variety comparison test should be carried out to select the varieties suitable for local planting, with higher single-head rate and larger single-head weight before production of single-head garlic. It is reported that when garlic petals weighing 0.5~ 1g are used as seed petals, the single head rate can reach 76%~92%, and the single head weighs 4~ 6g.

3. selective petal

The size of seed petal is related to the yield and quality of garlic. Choosing garlic cloves of suitable size as seed garlic can obtain high single-headed rate and moderate single-headed garlic. If the seed petal is too large, it will produce small garlic heads with 2 to 3 garlic petals, which will reduce the single-headed rate; if the seed petal is too small, the single-headed garlic produced is too small and loses its commodity value. Generally, the single weight of single-headed garlic is required to reach 5~8 grams. In order to produce high single-headed rate and suitable size of single-headed garlic, it is necessary to carry out experiments on the relationship between seed petal size and single-headed rate and single-headed weight. According to the production experience in Hubei province, when using the small garlic cloves of local white garlic varieties as seed cloves, the weight of 100 seeds should be less than 90 grams.

4. seed production

The suitable sowing time of garlic can only be determined by stage sowing experiment in local area. Sowing early, garlic seedlings have a long vegetative growth period, accumulate more nutrients, and easily produce small garlic heads with 2 to 3 garlic cloves; sowing late, the garlic head is too small. Autumn sowing area is generally 50 days later than garlic cultivation sowing. The amount of seed used per 667 square meters is generally about 100 kg.

When sowing, first ditch according to 15 cm row spacing, ditch depth about 6 cm, then sow petals according to plant spacing 3~4 cm, then cover soil, thick 3~4 cm. After sowing in the whole ridge, sow radish seeds evenly, with about 0.5 kg per mu, rake the ridge surface after sowing, and irrigate. The purpose of mixed sowing radish seeds is to inhibit the growth of garlic seedlings, increase the rate of single head and reduce the number of cloves.

5. field management

After the small radish seedlings emerge, the seedlings are thinned by stages, so that the distance of 6~8 cm is maintained. After all the radishes are harvested and listed in the early spring of the next year, the garlic field is managed by intertillage, weeding, topdressing and irrigation. During the garlic expansion period to ensure adequate water supply.

6. harvest

In autumn sowing area, garlic should be dug up in time when pseudostems become soft and most of the lower leaves dry up around summer of the next year (early May). Harvest early, single-headed garlic is not full; harvest late, garlic skin hardened, not easy to process. The single-headed garlic used for processing shall be cut off in time after being dug out and transported to the processing plant to prevent sun and rain. As fresh garlic for sale, garlic should be dried in the sun for 2~3 days after digging to prevent mildew. Generally 667 square meters produce about 300 kilograms, high yield can reach 500 kilograms.
