Tree peony is a kind of precious traditional Chinese medicine, which has long growth cycle, high yield, stable and considerable economic benefits, and the market demand has been increasing in recent years. Bozhou Precious Medicinal Materials planting Research Institute has successfully intercropped peony and crops for many years, which is popularized throughout the country.

I. Seedling raising methods

Peony usually uses seeds to raise seedlings and transplant, and the suitable seedling period is from August to December. Generally, the peony is sown by strip sowing. On the finished border, a ditch with a row spacing of 10cm and a plant spacing of 5cm is opened with a depth of 4cm, and the seeds are sown in the ditch, then covered with a layer of moist fine soil to flatten it slightly, and then covered with a layer of wheat straw 10cm thick to preserve soil moisture, with 50mur60kg of seeds for every 667 square meters. After thawing in the second year, the cover grass was removed between "Rain Water" and "the Waking of Insects". When the seedlings reached about 80%, they could be sprayed with 200 times Bordeaux solution on the stems and leaves of the seedlings to disinfect the seedbed and promote root growth in preparation for transplanting in autumn.

2. Transplanting methods

Peonies are usually transplanted from September to November, digging holes in the finished fields according to the row spacing of 45mure 55cm and the plant spacing of 35cm. In order to increase the yield, two seedlings can be planted in each pit. The method is to take two seedlings slightly apart in one hand, and fill the pit with the other hand. When the soil fills the pit, lift the seedlings up slightly so that the roots are straight but the terminal buds should not exceed the ground. Then fill the soil around the seedlings, tamp and cover the soil 10 centimeters thick for overwintering.

3. Intercropping and interplanting

The growth of tree peony was slow in the first 3 years. In order to make full use of land to increase income, intercropping and interplanting were adopted, and the economic benefit was considerable. Interplanting cotton in the first 2 years, peony planting a row of cotton in each row, cotton plant spacing of 40 cm, leaving a working path for every two rows of peony to facilitate cotton medication and pruning. The yield of interplanting cotton is the same as that of professionally planted cotton, while that of soybeans, corn, vegetables and other medicinal materials is the same as cotton. The dormant period of peony is from the first ten days of July to the middle of February, and the double-row interplanting does not affect each other. It can also be interplanted in the second year, and the density is half that of the first year. The third year is when the peony is in full bloom, and the seeds can be seeded at 130,000,000 kilograms. In the fourth year, the seed can reach more than 200 kilograms, and the rhizome medicinal materials can be harvested at the same time, and the dried peony can produce 550 kilograms of dried peony per 667 square meters.

IV. Disease and pest control

Peony is basically free of diseases and insect pests in the whole growing period. if leaf spot and root rot are found, we can refer to the control methods of fruit trees.

V. Harvest and processing

After transplanting, the peony is usually 3-4 years after transplanting, and the roots are dug in August-October. After several days, the roots are dug out, the soil is cleaned and put indoors. After a few days, the rhizomes become soft and easy to pull cores. After core-pulling, the peony is dried for medicinal use, commonly known as "black moutan bark", and some use glass pieces to scrape off the outer skin of the root, and then pull the core to dry, that is, the powder moutan (scraped moutan bark). Thick meat, thick and long strips without wood heart, white broken flour, strong aroma is preferred.
