Reporter Yan Zhangwen reported: can the navel orange tree stand the persistent low temperature and overcast rain? The reporter interviewed Fang Yiwen, director of the Citrus Science Research Institute, by telephone on the morning of January 28. Director Fang Yiwen, who is observing the freezing damage at the scene, told reporters that some navel orange orchards with higher elevations in Ningdu, Yudu, Ganxian, and other places in the north and central China have suffered from freezing damage, and ice has appeared on the leaves; as the temperature drops, the freezing line will continue to push to the south, posing a greater threat to navel orange trees. According to the weather forecast, the freezing rain and snow will last until the end of this month, and the temperature will drop. It is urgent to do a good job of anti-freezing in orchards. Fang Yiwen called on the majority of fruit growers to immediately implement the following emergency measures.

Timely deicing: gently tap the trunk and branches with a stick to shake off the ice on the leaves to avoid frost damage caused by ice contact with the leaves for a long time, reduce the pressure on the crown and avoid breaking the branches. Be careful not to hit the twig leaves directly, nor do you hurt the trunk. In the event of heavy snow in the later stage, it can also be carried out in this way. Second, canopy cover: cover the whole crown with straw or weeds, and adult trees can sprinkle some sunshade nets to control weeds on the crown. Third, tree plate cover: cover the tree plate tightly with straw or weeds, the weed thickness is more than 10 cm, press some clods above to prevent them from being blown away by the wind. The root neck should also be covered and cultivated, leaving no space in order to improve the soil temperature. Fourth, the trunk wrapped in straw: wrap the whole trunk with straw, and pay special attention to the tight wrapping of the root neck to prevent frostbite.

After the rain clears up and the temperature warms up, it is necessary to carry out post-frozen recovery work: timely removal of frozen leaves; shallow loose soil, thin fertilization to promote the recovery of tree potential; timely spraying to control citrus anthracnose; moderate pruning.
