Mature Hawthorn seeds can germinate only after a series of physiological changes under suitable conditions. In addition, the Hawthorn shell is thick and hard, with many colloids and small stomata, which is not easy to absorb water, expand and crack. Therefore, the seeds must be properly treated before sowing before they can emerge normally.

1. Stratification processing:

In autumn, choose a place that is dry and not easy to accumulate water, dig a pit with 50~100cm depth and 70~100cm width, and the length depends on the number of seeds, and the bottom of the pit is covered with 5~10cm thick fine sand. Mix 1 part of the seed with 5 parts of fine sand and water properly. It is appropriate to hold the seed into a ball and let go. Pour it into the pit, 10~15cm from the ground, cover sand flat with the ground, and then cover the soil higher than the ground. If the length of the pit is more than 1m, grass bundles or stalks should be inserted at a certain distance. Sweep the snow at any time in winter. From May to August of the next year, remove the covered soil, turn it up and down for 2 or 3 times, check for dry mildew and rot, and sow seeds in autumn. You can also sow seeds in the spring of the third year, but sow early to avoid mildew.

2. Soaking method of alkaline water and human urine:

The seeds are treated with this method, and the seedlings can emerge after sowing. The specific method is to dry the seeds for 3-4 days, then soak them in warm alkaline water of 60 ℃ for 24 hours (500g seeds with 50g alkali) for 24 hours, wash them and sun for 2 days, then use fresh human urine for 3-4 days, wash and sun for 2 hours, and sow the seeds after the seed coat is cracked, or store in sand until the beginning of the following spring.

3. Alternating cold and hot temperature treatment:

Soak the seeds in cold water for about 10 days, make them absorb enough water, remove them, spread them out at a low temperature, about 5cm thick, let the seeds freeze, freeze for 1-2 days, then keep stirring in hot water of 65 ℃, then soak for 1 day. After repeated treatment for 3 or 4 times, most of the seed shells were cracked, then mixed with 5 times of wet sand and stored for sowing in the following spring.

4. Crush:

Pour the dried seeds into a crushing plate, crush them, sift out the seed coat and sundries, and then hide them in sand until the following spring before sowing. When crushing, the seeds should be spread thicker so as not to crush the seeds.

5. Hot water blanching:

Pour the wet seeds which have just removed the pulp into 75 ℃ hot water (3 parts of boiled water to 1 part of cold water, the temperature is about 75 ℃), keep stirring, when the water temperature drops to about 25 ℃, stop stirring, soak for another night, remove and store with sand. 20 days before spring sowing in the following year, the seeds with sand were taken out and piled in the shelter of Xiangyang, covered with grass curtain, the temperature was controlled at 17 ℃ ~ 18 ℃, turned once a day, and sprayed with a small amount of water. When most of the seed shells were cracked, the seeds could be sown.
