The most important feature of pomegranate is that hidden buds have strong germinating power and are extremely resistant to pruning. This creates favorable conditions for plastic surgery, but the deficiency lies in its strong sprouting branches, tree-shaped disorder, the impact of ornamental and so on. In order to make the pomegranate have many flowers, fruits and beautiful shape, we must pay attention to pruning and shaping.

Pomegranate can be divided into three categories: fruit pomegranate, flower pomegranate and potted pomegranate. The pruning and shaping of pomegranate varies with different varieties, according to our experience in managing pomegranate over the years, as follows:

First, fruit pomegranate. Can be renovated into a single round head crown, pay attention to highlight the trunk, the upper branches should be trimmed into a natural development type, and the withered branches, diseased branches, dense branches, long branches and sprouting strips of the roots should be cut off in time, so as to facilitate ventilation and light, and can reduce the consumption of nutrients and get results. In the pruning and plastic surgery, the spring shoot should not be cut short, this is because the fruit setting rate of the terminal flower bud on the spring shoot is higher. In addition, we should also pay attention to the proper thinning of fruit to facilitate the concentration of nutrition, so that the fruit is large and few.

Second, flower pomegranate. Without pruning, 3-5 lateral branches can be trimmed into multiple tufted or dwarf flat-headed crowns. In the management, the branches and weak branches are removed at any time, such as cutting off the terminal buds without flowering to inhibit the infinite length of the plant, which can promote the production of new lateral buds. After a week of pruning, the buds can continue to bloom. After flowering, cut off the residual flowers and the residual branches that have already opened in time, so as to facilitate the re-emergence of new branches and blossom again. If not pruned after flowering, the flower branches will gradually increase and affect the tree shape, and the branches and flowers are not exuberant. The old branches of pomegranate should be shortened in the third year, and all the branches of three years ago should be cut off for a thorough renewal.

Third, potted pomegranate. In the growing season, according to the ornamental characteristics, it has been pruned many times and renovated into a variety of artistic shapes, such as spherical shape, single plant, low flat top, and so on, so as to achieve the purpose of beautiful tree shape and promoting the number of flowers and fruits.

Matters needing attention in the process of pomegranate shaping and pruning

The main results are as follows: 1. In spring, the withered branches, diseased branches, weak branches and long branches should be cut off, and the strong branches and crown should be retained, which is beneficial to promote the effect of multiple new branches, more flowering and more fruit. Seedlings 10 cm high began to pick the heart many times, promoting branches to achieve crown fullness.

2. When trimming, you should pay attention to the outside, not the inside, the straight, not the horizontal, and the cut should be left to the outside.

3. The repetition of pruning should be the overgrown branches and the sprouting shoots in the rhizosphere, because the elongated branches germinate from the hidden buds in the cortex of the trunk or large lateral main branches, and grow erect or oblique above, but the tissue is often too nutritious and soft, not easy to differentiate flower buds and interfere with the tree shape. The rhizosphere sprouting tillers germinate from the underground rhizosphere and grow faster than the crown branches, but most of them only consume nutrients to achieve the purpose of cultivation.
