Rhizoma Polygonatum (scientific name: Polygonatum sibiricum), also known as: chicken head Polygonatum, yellow chicken cabbage, pencil dish, claw ginseng, tiger ginger, chicken claw ginseng. It is a plant of the genus Polygonatum, the rhizome is transverse, cylindrical and nodules are dilated. Verticillate, sessile. Medicinal plants have the effect of tonifying spleen, moisturizing lung and promoting fluid.

Morphological characteristics of Rhizoma Polygonatum

The rhizome is cylindrical, and because the nodules are enlarged, one end of the Internode is thick, the other is thin, and there are short branches at the thick end (the traditional Chinese medicine calls this type of rhizome as chicken head Polygonatum), with a diameter of 1 cm to 2 cm. Stem 50-90 cm tall, or up to more than 1 m, sometimes climbing. Leaf wheel, 4-6 per round, strip-lanceolate, 8-15 cm long, 6-16 mm wide, apex rolled or bent into a hook. Inflorescences usually 2-4-flowered, umbellate-shaped, pedicels 1-2 cm long, pedicels (2.5 -) 4-10 mm long, drooping; bracts located at base of pedicels, membranous, subulate or striate-lanceolate, 3-5 mm long, with 1 vein; perianth milky white to yellowish, full length 9-12 mm, perianth tube slightly constricted, lobes ca. 4 mm; filaments 0.5 mm long, anthers 2 mm long; ovary ca. 3 mm, style 5 mm long. Berries 7-10 mm in diam., black, with 4-7 seeds. The flowering period is from May to June and the fruiting period is from August to September.

Growth habits of Rhizoma Polygonatum

Rhizoma Polygonatum likes the humid climate and has the characteristics of shade, cold tolerance and fear of drought. it grows poorly in dry areas and grows well in humid and shady environments. It grows well in loam with deep soil layer, loose and fertile soil, good drainage and water retention, and is not suitable for plant growth in barren, dry and sticky land.

Field cultivation techniques of Rhizoma Polygonatum:

1. Selecting and preparing land should be moist and fully shaded, and the soil should be loam or sandy loam with loose texture and good water retention. Before sowing, first turn deeply once, combined with land preparation, apply farm manure 2000 kg per mu, turn into the soil as base fertilizer, and then rake fine leveling, make the border, the width of the border is 1.2m.

two。 Mode of reproduction

(1) Rhizome propagated in late autumn or early spring late March, select 1-2-year-old strong, disease-free plant rhizome, select the tender part of the apex, cut into several segments, each section has 3-4 nodes, the wound is slightly dried, planted according to row spacing 22-24 cm, plant spacing 10-16 cm, depth 5 cm, slightly pressed and watered after covering soil, and then watered every 3-5 days to keep the soil moist. When planting at the end of autumn, it should be frozen and covered with some manure and grass to keep warm.

(2) after seed propagation for 8 months, mature and full seeds were selected for sand storage treatment: 1 seed and 3 sandy soil were mixed evenly. Store in a pit 30cm deep in the shade and keep it moist. To sift out the seeds in late March of the following year, spread the seeds evenly into the shallow ditch on the border surface according to the row spacing of 12-15 cm, cover the soil with about 1.5 cm, water after slight pressure, and cover with a layer of grass to moisturize. Remove the cover grass before emergence, when the seedling height is 6-9 cm, the seedlings can be properly planted in the dense place, and transplant after 1 year. In order to meet the shading conditions for the growth of Polygonatum polygonatum, corn can be planted on the ridge.

3. Field management should often plough and weed in the early stage of growth, once a year in April, June, September and November, shallow hoe and proper soil cultivation, and pull weeds in the later stage. In case of drought or the need for timely watering in sunny and dry places. Topdressing was carried out in combination with intertillage and weeding every year, and 1500 kg of soil miscellaneous fertilizer was applied per mu after the first three intertillage. 50 kg of superphosphate and 50 kg of cake fertilizer were mixed well and applied in trenches between rows, and then covered with soil and fertilizer. Huang Jing avoids water and shade, and should pay attention to drainage and intercropping corn.
