According to the vegetable Research Institute of Handan City, Hebei Province, the achievement of "breeding of a new hybrid variety 'Zijiao 2' with stress resistance and storage tolerance of purple onion formed by the Hebei science and technology support project undertaken by the institute has reached the international advanced level by the provincial expert group.

The growth period of this variety is about 270 days. The onion is nearly spherical, with a horizontal diameter of 9 cm ~ 10 cm and a vertical diameter of 8 cm ~ 9 cm. The skin is dark purple with bright luster and the quality is crisp and tender. The average weight of single ball tested in the field was 408 grams, which was 27.5% higher than that of the control variety "Xinhongxing".

The expert group agreed that the achievement was innovative in the creation of onion germplasm resources and variety breeding, and that the bred variety "Zijiao 2" had outstanding excellent characters, good marketability and broad application prospects, and agreed that this study had reached the international advanced level.
