Rabbit-eyed blueberries and high-clump blueberries are very suitable for growing in the south, while southern sharp blue, Misdai, southern brilliant, southern O'Neill, V3 blueberries and M7 blueberries can also be grown in the south. Due to the high temperature and humidity of the air in the south, heavy soil viscosity and poor air permeability, suitable varieties should be selected when planting blueberries, the soil should be improved, and the "aging seedlings" should be replaced in time.

At present, the most popular blueberry varieties in southern China are rabbit-eyed blueberries and high-clump blueberries, while southern sharp blue, Misdai, southern brilliant, southern O'Neill, V3 blueberries, M7 blueberries and other varieties are also planted.

1. Advantages of growing blueberries in the south.

When blueberries are planted in the south of China, the fruits mature earlier, can be listed in advance, and have strong market competitiveness. Generally speaking, blueberries grown in southern China will mature from the end of April to the middle of June. In some areas with better climatic environment, blueberries will mature in mid-late March. The output of planting in the southern region is relatively high, which is a major advantage.

2. The disadvantage of growing blueberries in the south.

The southern region is mostly clayey red loam, yellow loam and paddy soil, the content of organic matter in the soil is low, and the air permeability is also poor, which will have a certain impact on the growth of blueberries. Blueberries are afraid of waterlogging, and there is more rainfall in the south, which is easy to cause stagnant water. if the stagnant water is not emptied in time, the roots of blueberry trees will rot, and the summer temperature is higher, coupled with the higher air humidity in the Yangtze River basin, which leads to higher air temperature and humidity. It also affects the growth of blueberries.

3. Variety selection

Combined with the advantages and disadvantages of growing blueberries in the south, in order to reflect the early ripening of blueberries on the market, in order to make up for the lack of processing market, rabbit-eyed blueberries and high-clump blueberries are the most popular choice in the south.

Rabbit-eyed blueberries: they mature from mid-June to mid-August. Their requirements for soil are not very high, and they are easy to grow and manage. Although the taste is slightly worse than that of northern blueberries, it is still one of the varieties suitable for planting in the south. At present, most of them are "brilliant" and "Baldvin".

South Gaocong blueberries: their fruits mature early and sell at a higher market price. At present, the more mature varieties planted in the south are "Sharp Blue", early-maturing "O'Neill", medium-maturing "Misty", late-maturing "Regosi" and "Brigita". "Biloxi", which has low demand for cold storage, is also suitable for planting in Hainan and South China.

4. Avoid planting Beigao clump varieties.

North high clump blueberries can only be planted in the south of high altitude areas such as Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan, and they have poor tolerance to high temperature and humidity. If planted in the south, they will grow normally in the first two years, but after the third year, there will be early defoliation, leaf bud sterility, dry death and other phenomena, especially in areas that cannot reach the required cold storage capacity of blueberries. Therefore, it is best not to plant blueberries of north high clump varieties in the south, so as not to cause unnecessary losses.

5. Soil improvement

In the south, blueberries should be planted in high ridges, whether in mountains, hills or flat bottoms. Moreover, the soil in the south is heavy and sticky, easy to accumulate water, low organic matter content and poor permeability, so the soil must be improved first when growing blueberries in the south. Peat soil, pine needles, sawdust, bark, perlite, river sand, organic materials, crop straw and organic fertilizer can be mixed into the soil to improve the soil. In general, the ratio of charcoal wood and organic materials should be controlled at about 50-70%.

6. Timely replacement of "aging seedlings"

In recent years, due to the growing number of blueberry seedlings, many seedlings have not been changed into "aging seedlings" in time. Although they will not die after planting, their growth will be very poor.

The nutrition bowl specifications of breeding seedlings must meet the standard, the nutrition bowl specifications of two-year-old seedlings require the national standard 250PX caliber, and the nutrition bowl specifications of three-year-old seedlings require the national standard 375PX caliber; generally, the seedlings with complete, developed and yellowish-white roots are of good quality, the roots are brown or black, and the seedlings with mildew smell are not selected.
