Do blueberries need sunshine?

The growth speed of blueberries is directly affected by light intensity, too high or too low light intensity will slow down the growth speed of blueberries and even cause them to die, so blueberry cultivation requires moderate light intensity. Blueberry light requirements vary according to their varieties. Most blueberry varieties only need more than 1000 feet of light to meet their basic growth needs. The specific light intensity should be adjusted according to different varieties.

Blueberry growth requires light

Blueberries grow at different speeds depending on the intensity of light. Strong or weak light can affect blueberry growth and even cause them to die. Therefore, planting blueberries requires moderate light intensity.

Different varieties have different light intensity requirements. Most varieties can meet their basic needs as long as the light intensity is above 1000 feet. However, if the light intensity is below 650 feet, the photosynthetic capacity of some varieties will decrease. For example, if the light intensity is increased above 1000 feet, the number of flower buds will increase.

When the light intensity is less than 2100fc, the fruit ripening time of short-bush blueberry will be delayed, and the lower light intensity will affect the ripening rate and sugar content of fruit at harvest time.

Excessive UV light will affect blueberry growth and fruit development, normal sunny ground UV light intensity of 1.74 W/m, if the use of 24-44uv-B units of UV light to treat blueberry fruit, will lead to a decrease in fruit weight, in the berry area using 24uv-B units of UV light, will make them unable to produce wax, when the UV light is 4 times higher than normal light, blueberry surface will appear sunburn like scars. Ultraviolet light will inhibit the growth rate of blueberries, the price is low, the number of flower buds, so planting blueberries must choose a place with strong light intensity to ensure normal growth of blueberries.

Blueberry temperature requirements

Blueberry trees should be planted in sunny and humid places. They can withstand high temperatures. Even if the temperature is around 40℃ in the summer sun, they will not be sunburned. As long as they are watered enough, they can grow at 40-50℃. However, if the light is insufficient, blueberries will stop growing. Even if they bloom, they will not bear fruit. Water blueberry trees every day in summer, but in moderation. Don't water them too much, causing standing water and rotten roots.

When the blueberry seedlings planted in the pot are planted, they need to be placed indoors for about 7 days in a ventilated place without direct vision. After 7 days, they can be moved outdoors for normal planting and maintenance.

When the temperature is 20-30℃, the photosynthetic capacity of blueberry trees reaches its strongest. If the temperature is lower than 20℃ or higher than 30℃, the photosynthetic capacity will obviously decrease. In order to ensure their normal photosynthetic capacity, they should be placed in a sunny leeward place in spring to provide them with higher growth temperature. In summer, they should be placed in a place with better ventilation capacity to prevent the temperature from being too high to harm the trees.

Temperature and soil temperature have certain influence on blueberry growth rate. When the temperature rises from 18℃ to 30℃, the number of rhizomes of short bush blueberry will obviously increase and the growth rate will accelerate. When the soil temperature rises from 13℃ to 32℃, the growth rate of high bush blueberry will accelerate. When the soil temperature is below 20℃, the branch spacing of high bush blueberry will grow. With the increase of temperature, the tree body will grow upright and If the temperature is below 8 ° C and the soil temperature is 9 ° C, blueberry roots will stop growing. 15.6 ° C-26.7 ° C is the optimal temperature for blueberry growth.

In the planting process, the time for cold protection of seedlings should not be too early or too late, generally when the temperature is stable below 5℃.

cold storage requirement

Blueberry trees want to blossom normally, must maintain the growth environment temperature of 800-1200 hours is below 7℃, this is called cold storage capacity, different varieties of cold storage time is different, for example, northern high bush blueberry needs to grow in 0-7℃ environment 800-1200 hours. If the cold storage time is not reached, the blueberry tree will bloom, but will not bear fruit.

Potted blueberries do not need to be maintained indoors with heating or warmth in winter. Generally, they can be placed in garages, warehouses or backlit balconies where the temperature is kept below 7.2℃. If blueberries are planted on balconies in Jiangnan area, they can be placed directly on balconies in winter.
