Last Updated: 2024/09/19, When growing blueberries, we should choose soils that are highly permeable, loose, moist but without stagnant water, the pH value of the soil should be controlled at 4.0-4.8, the lowest content of organic matter in the soil should not be less than 5%, and it would be better to be controlled between 8% and 12%. Blueberry planting should choose soil with strong permeability, loose, moist but no ponding, the pH value of soil should be controlled at 4.0-4.8, the minimum organic matter content in soil should not be less than 5%, and the best control should be between 8-12%. If the soil does not meet the requirements for blueberry growth, it should be improved before planting to ensure that blueberries can grow normally.

1. Soil selection

Blueberry planting soil requirements have strong permeability, loose, moist but not water, pH value requirements between 4.0-4.8, organic matter content between 8-12%, at least not less than 5%. To promote blueberry growth, soil that does not meet blueberry growth requirements should be improved prior to planting.

2, planting time

Generally, blueberries can be planted in spring and autumn. It is better to plant them earlier in spring, and the survival rate of seedlings planted in autumn will be higher.

3, fertilizer precautions

Blueberry is a typical calcium-deficient plant. If blueberries are planted on calcareous soil, they will lose their green due to iron deficiency due to too much calcium in the soil. The contents of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium in blueberry trees are relatively low. Attention must be paid to controlling the amount of fertilizer when fertilizing to avoid too much fertilizer causing damage to trees.

Blueberry has a strong ability to absorb ammonium nitrogen in the soil. When planting blueberries, because the soil has been doped with organic matter or covered with organic matter, only topdressing is needed in the planting process. Generally, nitrogen fertilizer, phosphorus fertilizer and potassium fertilizer are mainly applied, and farm manure is rarely applied.

4. Watering

Blueberry is fibrous root system, they do not have a thick root system of taproot, its absorption part is like human hair, generally distributed in 5-20cm shallow soil layer, their drought resistance is very poor, in watering to comply with the principle of not watering, watering is watering thoroughly.

5, blueberry common nutrient deficiency

Boron deficiency disease: the performance of the bud is not normal opening, in a few weeks after germination, the terminal bud will wither into dark brown, and finally the top will die, mainly because the soil moisture is insufficient to cause boron deficiency, the solution is daily adequate watering, can be sprayed on the foliage 0.3-0.5% borax solution.

Iron deficiency chlorosis: the performance of inter-vein chlorosis, if the situation is serious, the veins will also lose green, the symptoms of the new slightly upper leaves are more serious, mainly because the pH value in the soil is too high, the soil is calcareous, lack of organic matter content, the solution is to apply acid fertilizer methionine, if combined with soil improvement mixed with acid peat, the effect will be more significant, but also can be sprayed on the leaves of 0.1-0.3% of integrated iron.

Magnesium deficiency: manifested by berries in the mature leaf margin and vein green, generally in the rapid growth of new slightly old leaves appear, slowly green parts will turn yellow, finally turn red, the solution is to apply magnesium oxide to the soil.

6. Prevention and control of pests and diseases

The main diseases and insect pests of blueberry are leaf spot disease, canker disease, blight and leech. In the planting process, prevention and treatment should be carried out according to their occurrence rules in various regions.

7, winter protection

The drought resistance of short-bush blueberry and half-tall blueberry is stronger, but in order to avoid the freezing injury of shoot and flower bud in winter, when planting blueberry in cold area, covering straw, leaves, sacks or straw woven bags can help them to survive the winter smoothly.
