Chinese chestnut should be planted in slightly acidic soil, preferably sandy loam with deep soil layer, moist soil and strong drainage, sandy or weathered sandstone and granite with more organic matter. If the PH value in the soil where Chinese chestnut is planted is higher than 7, it will make the chestnut tree grow poorly and may even cause the chestnut tree to stop growing.

It is best to choose slightly acidic soil for planting Chinese chestnut, and the pH value should be controlled at 4.6-7, which requires that the soil is deep, moist and has good drainage, and the sandy loam rich in organic matter or weathered sandstone and granite is the best. If Chinese chestnut is planted in saline-alkaline soil and calcareous soil with PH value above 7, it will lead to poor growth or even inability to grow.

Requirements for growth Environment of Chinese Chestnut

1. Temperature requirement

The annual average temperature suitable for the growth and development of Chinese chestnut is best controlled at 10-17 ℃, from April to October, the daily average temperature during the growing period is 10-20 ℃, and the suitable temperature for flowering period is 17-27 ℃. If the temperature is lower than 15 ℃ or higher than 27 ℃, it will affect the pollination, fertilization and fruit setting of chestnut trees. During the fruit expansion period from August to September, the average temperature above 20 ℃ is more suitable for chestnut growth, and can adapt to the low temperature of minus 25 ℃ in winter.

2. Moisture requirements

Chinese chestnut can be planted in areas where the annual rainfall can reach 2000 mm, but the area with annual rainfall of 500 mm to 1000 mm is the most suitable. The demand for water of Chinese chestnut is different in different phenological periods. In autumn, Chinese chestnut is in the filling stage, sufficient water can promote the full growth of Chinese chestnut, but also increase the yield of Chinese chestnut.

3. Lighting requirements

Chinese chestnut likes to grow in places with plenty of light, especially in their growth period, so make sure that there is sufficient light. If you plant Chinese chestnut in the valley where the average daily sunshine time is not 6 hours, it will make the tree grow upright, the leaves are thin and the branches are thin. The yield and quality of Chinese chestnut will be reduced. When planting Chinese chestnut, the density should be controlled reasonably, and the trees should be shaped and pruned according to their requirements for light.

4. Soil requirements

Planting Chinese chestnut on sandy loam with more organic matter and good aeration will grow better and produce a lot of mycorrhiza. If planted in the soil with heavy viscosity and poor ventilation, the drainage is not strong in the rainy season, which will affect the growth and development of chestnut trees.

Chinese chestnut is sensitive to soil acidity and alkalinity. The soil with PH value within 4-7 is suitable for chestnut growth. The slightly acidic soil with PH value of 5-6 is the most suitable for chestnut growth. Most of the weathered soil in limestone mountain area is alkaline, so it is not suitable to plant Chinese chestnut.

The slightly acidic and permeable granite and gneiss weathered soil is suitable for the growth and development of Chinese chestnut, and the slightly acidic soil can meet the needs of calcium and manganese for the growth of chestnut trees. If the PH value in the soil is high, manganese will be insoluble. It will be difficult for chestnut to absorb. Chestnut trees are high manganese plants, and their leaves are rich in more than 0.2% manganese, which is higher than other fruit trees. If Chinese chestnut is planted in alkaline soil, the manganese content in their leaves will be reduced to 0.12%, which will make the leaves green and their metabolic skills will be very low. Therefore, the slightly acidic soil is the most suitable soil for growing Chinese chestnut.
