Site selection: choose sandy loam and middle loam with open terrain and leeward direction. Planting: according to the row spacing of 1.5 m × 2 m, dig holes with 50 cm in length and 50 cm in width and 30 cm in depth, and then apply about 30 kg of rotten farm manure. Late management: seedlings should set up and bind vines after growing new shoots, artificial cross-pollination should be carried out during flowering, and dense branches, disease and insect branches and weak twigs should be cut off.

I. selection of sites

1. August melon is a shallow root tree species, there is no main root, the lateral root is more developed, so the soil requirements are not very strict, but like light, calcium, generally choose to plant in open, leeward and sunny sandy loam and medium loam.

2. It is not suitable to be planted in waterlogged land, the soil texture should be loose and water conservation, fertilizer conservation and good air permeability, and the soil with thicker soil layer is more suitable for planting August melon, which is beneficial to promote the fast growth, high yield and good quality of August melon, and the production cost is relatively low.

II. Planting

1. Choose to dig the holes of length and width 50cm and deep 30cm according to the plant spacing of 1.5m × 2m in winter. When digging holes, the topsoil should be stacked separately from the core soil, and each hole can be treated with rotten farm manure 30kg or so, and then mixed with the topsoil and then filled with soil.

2. Before the melon vines sprout in spring and August, you can transplant the bred August melon seedlings into the hole. Do not plant too deep and cause the harm of waterlogging. After planting, you should water thoroughly and cover the roots with grass about 10cm thickness.

3. the surrounding weeds and crop straw can be used as mulch, and cover some soil evenly after covering, so as to avoid wind blowing and causing fire.

III. Post-management

1. After the new shoots of August melon seedlings grow, it is necessary to set up and bind vines in time to avoid grazing by herbivores and fertilize properly, which is helpful to promote the growth of seedlings.

2. In general, the flowering, shoot growth and canopy formation of melon in August will take place at the same time, and the rapid growth period of young fruit will occur after falling flower, and it is also the time when the tree consumes a lot of nutrients.

3. Generally, sufficient fertilizer and water should be applied before flowering to ensure that the tree has sufficient nutrition. In the fruit expansion stage, the flower bud will begin to differentiate, during which phosphorus and potassium fertilizer can be added to the fruit ripening, which is beneficial to the flower formation in the second year.

4. In the wild state, melons will self-pollinate in August, so the fruit setting rate is relatively low, and the fruit drop is serious. During artificial domestication and cultivation, in addition to the application of organic fertilizer, artificial cross-pollination should be carried out at the flowering stage, which is beneficial to improve the fruit setting rate.

In May and August, there are two kinds of melon new shoots: short branches and non-short branches, generally, the non-short branches have withered top, so there is no terminal bud, and the flower bud is a mixed bud, which is often born on the top of the shortened branch or on the annual branch, and the terminal flower bud is the main fruit.

6. Pruning is mainly based on sparse pruning, during which overdense branches, disease and insect branches and weak branchlets should be cut off. As the fruiting branches mainly bear fruit at the top of flower buds, they should be cut as little as possible, or not truncated.
