Lotus is generally distributed in Central Asia, West Asia, North America, India, China, Japan and other subtropical and temperate regions. Lotus extends from Hainan Island (about 19 degrees north latitude) to Fujin (47.3 degrees north latitude) in Heilongjiang in the south, Shanghai and Taiwan Province in the east, and the northern foot of Tianshan Mountain in the west. It is distributed in most parts of the country except Xizang Autonomous region and Qinghai Province. The vertical distribution can reach 2000 meters above sea level and can also be seen in the deep mountains and marshes of Qinling and Shennongjia.
It has been cultivated in China for more than 3,000 years, and carbonized ancient lotus seeds have been found in Liaoning and Zhejiang, which shows its long history. Taiwan, on the other hand, was only introduced from Japan 100 years ago. In the areas of Baihe Town and Chiayi in Tainan, the cultivation area has reached nearly 350 hectares, making it one of the most important tourist areas in Taiwan. Wild lotus still exists in some remote parts of Asia, but most of them are planted artificially.
