Reed and Reed grass are plants growing in rivers and lakes and wetlands, and their shapes are similar, so many people can't tell whether they are Reed or Reed grass. So what's the difference between Reed and Reed?

First, the morphological characteristics of Reed.

The Reed is perennial and the rhizome is well developed. Culms erect, 1-3 (8) m tall, 1-4 cm in diameter, with more than 20 nodes, basal and upper internodes shorter, longest internodes located in lower 4-6 nodes, 20-25 (40) cm long, waxy powder at lower nodes.

The lower part of the leaf sheath is shorter than the upper one and longer than its internodes; the ligule margin is densely covered with a ring of short cilia about 1 mm long, both sides of the ciliate 3-5 mm long, easy to fall off; leaf blade lanceolate-linear, 30 cm long, 2 cm wide, glabrous, tip long acuminate into filiform.

Panicle large, 20-40 cm long, ca. 10 cm wide, branches numerous, 5-20 cm long, bearing densely pendulous spikelets; spikelet stalk 2-4 mm long, glabrous; spikelet ca. 12 mm long, with 4 flowers. Glumes with 3 veins, the first glume 4 mm long; the second glume ca. 7 mm. The first sterile Lemma is male, ca. 12 mm, the second Lemma 11 mm long, with 3 veins, apex long acuminate, basal disc extended, both sides densely as long as Lemma filiform pilose, with conspicuous joints at connection with glabrous rachilla, easily deciduous from joint at maturity; Palea ca. 3 mm, two ridges scabrid; stamens 3, anthers 1.5-2 mm, yellow; caryopsis ca. 1.5 mm.

2. Morphological characteristics of Reed grass.

Herbs perennial, 0.5m tall. Rhizome stout, transverse. Culms erect, hollow, 2-10 mm in diam. Leaf sheaths glabrous or finely hairy; ligule short, densely shortly hairy, leaf blade flattened, 15-35 cm long, 1-3.5 cm wide, smooth or margin scabrous. Panicles dense, spreading, slightly pendulous. 8 Mel 30 cm long; spikelets compressed on both sides, 12-16 mm long, usually containing 3 Mel 5 florets; glume moment orbicular-lanceolate, 3-veined, the first glume 4 mm long, the second glume 6-9 mm long; the first floret is often male, Lemma narrowly lanceolate, 10-14.5 mm long, Palea 3 Lemma 4 mm long; second Lemma 10-15 mm long, base slender, with 6-12 mm pilose. Palea ca. 3.5 mm. Flowering and fruiting from July to September.

Both Reed and Reed can be used as medicine, and both have the effects of clearing away heat and invigorating fluid, stopping vomiting and so on, but the two must be clearly distinguished.
