There are many varieties of watermelon, and the sweetness, peel and pulp of different varieties are also different. Watermelons are planted in most parts of our country, among which Lanzhou in Gansu, Xinjiang, Dezhou in Shandong and Liyang in Jiangsu are more famous. Today, let's take a look at the requirements for the growing environment of watermelons. What are the key points of cultivation techniques and management?

What are the requirements for the growing environment of watermelons?

1. Temperature requirement

Watermelon is suitable for growth and development in a relatively high temperature environment, so it is very resistant to high temperature, but the most suitable growth temperature is between 18 and 32 degrees Celsius.

2. Lighting requirements

Watermelon is a light-loving plant, if the light is sufficient, it will generally produce good quality watermelons. Especially in the fruiting period, the light needs to be between 10 hours and 12 hours, and the fruit quality is not good if it is less than eight hours.

3. Soil requirements

Watermelon is suitable for growing in sandy soil with good looseness, strong drainage, loose soil and deep soil layer, and weak acid is more suitable.

4. Moisture requirement

Watermelon is resistant to drought, so when Rain Water is more, it is necessary to drain the excess water in time, otherwise the disease is easy to occur when the humidity is too high, resulting in the decrease of yield and quality.

2. Cultivation techniques and management points of watermelon

1. Soil preparation and fertilization

In addition to choosing the right soil to grow watermelons, we should also pay attention to not continuous cropping in the plots where watermelons are grown, and generally rotate them every four to five years. The former crops should choose corn, rice and so on as undergraduate crops.

The land for planting watermelons must be turned deep in winter, dig drainage ditches around, and open the box according to a certain line spacing. Dig a ditch on one side of the border and apply basic fertilizer. One mu of land needs 6,000 jin of farm manure, and then 30 to 40 jin of phosphate fertilizer is added, and then mixed with borax, zinc fertilizer and so on.

2. Planting and management

When watermelon seedlings grow three or five true leaves, you can choose a sunny day with a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius to plant, and pay attention to the windless environment. The nursery bed should be watered thoroughly two or three days before planting. After planting, the fixed root water should be irrigated, the planting hole should be closed, and the small arch shed should be covered to keep warm.

If you encounter low temperature weather, you need to cover another layer of greenhouse film. Within a week after planting, it is necessary to increase heat preservation measures to promote slow-growing, generally speaking, it is not windproof, and the film of the small arch shed is opened during the day.

3. Management of extension period

The main purpose of this period is to promote the growth of roots, stems and leaves, increase leaf area, improve photosynthetic efficiency, accumulate rich assimilation substances, and provide material needs for the normal development of flower organs.

4. Management of flowering and fruiting period

During the flowering and fruit setting period of watermelon, we should pay attention to the phenomenon of overgrowing plants and control water and fertilizer. It is found that twisting shoots and picking hearts after pollination are used to improve the fruit setting rate.
